Sessile: Communities of Attachment

SESSILE

IMG_8975.jpg

This toy theater, crafted from cardboard and other recycled materials, was originally developed for the International Toy Theater Festival organized by Great Small Works in April 2020, during the first months of the Covid-19 pandemic. Inspired by the endlessly fascinating ecological diversity of the Chesapeake Bay, the 5-minute performance features a community of barnacles who have much to teach us about staying anchored during times of isolation and challenge. I acknowledge that this work is made on the un-ceded, ancestral lands of the Piscataway people and other Chesapeake First Families, the original and ongoing stewards of this land. I also am indebted to the work of Alice Jane and Robert Lippson, authors of "Life in the Chesapeake Bay," and Peter Redgrave, who recorded this work and makes his puppet show debut as the asteroid.
